Karva Chuath

Tomorrow is Karva Chuath, a Hindu and Sikh festival in which married women fast to pray for the health of their husbands. The fast begins at sunrise and lasts until they gaze upon the full moon (through a sieve, in which they see their husband's face). We arrived at the marketplace after midnight, and spent a few hours among pocketfuls of women and men clustered in various corners; women receiving henna, and men applying it.

I watched two brothers create incredibly intricate designs upon wrists, hands, and ankles of our group. Street dogs bantered tooth and maw, weary artists huddled under blankets for warmth, and the full moon's eye burned above its future audience.

Since I arrived in India two days ago, I experienced my first moment of peace-- and a sense of haunting wonder that echoed from deep within; that inner country I have not yet reached but occasionally feel its presence.

Elsa

Elsa spent her summer rescuing and rehabilitating seabirds afflicted by oil spills. She also juggles. 'It helps me relax,' she told me. I couldn't quite place her accent though she told me she was destined for London.

Airports need more Elsas.
Scratch that, everywhere needs more Elsas.

Catching the Cascade Flyer

I snapped photo after photo; I couldn't stop.

A warm red-headed woman approached me, and asked,
"Have you ever been up in one of these?"
I gushed gibberish about bucketlists and wishlists and crotch-washing willy wonka rainbows.
She smiled, "Well our crew didn't show up, so you can go up if you want to."

Go up.

Chase them.

"Where will we land?" I asked.

He grabbed at a valve and fire erupted above,
dragon's maw holding us aloft.
"I don't know," he said, "Wherever the wind takes us.
There's no other way."

And god damn if that wasn't the best answer to any question I've ever asked.

one day you will be a king

Leonidas, Longshanks, left for dead.
(Even Braque was once confused)
Kings bartered like chocolate and play-me-skiffs.
Hobbies for the worms
tunneling into an elected heart.

There's only one way to go from here folks.

again

again.
a spark-bite taken out of darkness.
heart's flint rubbing against you.
the first firefly of the season
lights his beacon
again.

anniversary +1

It stands for
"a considerable stretch of prose that has been omitted."

So they say.

I have a different theory.  I believe it is shorthand for rest in peace, sans letters, for the passing of a mutually understood thought.  A memorial to like minds and a noble abandonment of soon-to-be antiquated verbal and written speak.
